02/19/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - A pair of teams that have shown improved play in recent weeks will get together this evening at the Wachovia Center, where the Boston Bruins resume a long road trip with a showdown against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Although both clubs are on the outside looking in of the Eastern Conference playoff picture, with the Flyers well out of the postseason chase, each enters tonight's game with victories in three of its last four contests.
Philadelphia finally got its first win without Peter Forsberg in the lineup on Saturday, a 5-3 decision over the rival New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Simon Gagne and Geoff Sanderson each had a goal and an assist to lead the way.
The Flyers traded star center Forsberg to the Nashville Predators on Thursday in exchange for right wing Scottie Upshall, 19-year-old defense prospect Ryan Parent and a pair of 2007 draft choices. Upshall made a good impression with his new team, scoring a power-play goal in the third period during his Philly debut.
Philadelphia had gone 0-13-3 in the games the oft-injured Forsberg had missed this season, then was dealt a 4-2 loss to Toronto on the night of the big trade.
Antero Niittymaki made 40 saves for the Flyers, who still have a league-low 40 points on the season.
Philadelphia did suffer a significant injury on Saturday, as right wing Mike Knuble fractured his right cheekbone and orbital bone in a scary collision with New York's Brendan Shanahan during the third period. Knuble, who ranks second on the team in goals (22) and points (43), will be sidelined indefinitely.
Gagne has scored a goal in five consecutive games and has amassed 11 points (7 goals, 4 assists) during that stretch.
Boston outlasted the Eastern Conference-leading Buffalo Sabres in a thrilling shootout in its most recent outing. Petr Tenkrat's goal in the eighth round proved to be the difference as the Bruins came away with a 4-3 victory Saturday at HSBC Arena.
Tim Thomas stopped all eight Buffalo skaters he faced during the deciding phase and finished with 22 saves in regulation for Boston, which won for the fifth time in its last seven games. Shean Donovan and Marc Savard each registered a goal and an assist on the evening.
The Bruins are currently eight points behind Montreal and Toronto for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Boston will be playing the third installment of a six-game road trip, which began with a loss to the New York Islanders on Thursday, and owns an 11-14-2 record away from home.
The Flyers are a dismal 5-16-7 at the Wachovia Center this season but have won two of their last three home games.
Boston earned a 4-3 triumph over Philadelphia in Beantown back in January and has taken the last two meetings in this series.

Many “experts” predicted the Panthers to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, of course they could not even make the playoffs in an extremely weak NFC. The Saints definitely made up for the disappointing seasons of their NFC South brethren by exploding out of no where en route to the NFC Championship game. For the avid NFL gambler, it is imperative to pay attention to the NFL draft. Although free agency gets a ton of publicity, the successful franchises build their teams around the draft.
1. New Orleans Saints
Who would have thought this time last year that the Saints would be the favorites to win the NFC South for the 2007 campaign? New Orleans is loaded with firepower on the offensive side of the ball but with the exodus of Joe Horn they will most likely look to draft a WR on Day 1. Despite having the NFL’s 3rd ranked pass defense last season, the Saints will most likely upgrade their CB’s with one of their first two picks. Other possibilities for the Saints will be TE and DT. Because of where they will be selecting (27th), the Saints could go the “best available player” route which could net a LB.

2. Carolina Panthers
Carolina was one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL last season. With the signing of David Carr, expect the very first quarterback controversy to come out of Carolina if Jake Delhomme doesn’t rebound quickly from an average 2007 season. With veteran safety Mike Minter getting up there in age, they will look to draft a safety on Day 1 but probably not in the first round. LB is another need with the loss of Chris Draft to go along with Dan Morgan’s concussion problems. If TE Greg Olsen is still on the board, he might be too good to pass up despite their needs on the defensive side of the ball.

3. Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons were another NFC South team to have a disappointing 2007 season. The Falcons were able to improve their draft position with the trade of coveted backup QB Matt Schaub. High on the list of Day 1 needs will be a defensive end to replace Patrick Kerney and a hard hitting safety since Lawyer Milloy is nearing the end of his career. With an additional 2nd round pick, the Falcons could attempt to trade up to acquire local product WR Calvin Johnson.

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Age really caught up to the Bucs last season. The Bucs still have plenty of household names on defense in Ronde Barber, Simeon Rice and Derrick Brooks but the one thing those three have in common is unfortunately age. It is imperative for the Bucs to get much younger, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Despite having bigger needs on the defensive side of the ball, WR Calvin Johnson is the most likely pick if he is still available when the Bucs pick at the four spot. This would suit Bucs’ faithful just fine as Johnson is widely considered the top talent in the draft and it is a position of need for the Bucs.

Out west, 22nd-ranked Arizona State will be battling for their first victory over 21st-ranked California since 2000. Although the Golden Bears are listed as 7.5-point favorites, the Sun Devils are 3-0, lead the nation in sacks with 18 and possess the Pac-10's leading passer in sophomore quarterback Rudy Carpenter.
